How to Make Hot and Sour Soup

Many versions of easy hot and sour soup recipes can be found across Asia, such as the famous Thai hot and sour soup and Vietnamese hot and sour soup. Since this is a website primarily featuring Chinese cooking, I will be sharing with you an easy Chinese hot and sour soup recipe today. Some hot and sour soup recipes use the silken type of tofu, but I find that it falls apart too easily. Instead, I recommend that you use firm tofu. If you want a vegetarian hot and sour soup recipe, simply do not add any meat. Replace it with more tofu if you wish.

Easy Hot and Sour Soup Ingredients:

  • 1 piece fresh firm tofu, cut into 2-inch strips
  • 3 ounces raw shredded pork
  • Cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup bamboo shoots, cut into thin strips
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese black fungus (wood ear)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Salt and white pepper to taste

Preparation:

Put 1 tablespoon soy sauce in a bowl and marinate the pork for 20 minutes. To reconstitute the fungus, soak in warm water for 20 minutes or until soft. Rinse, and cut into thin strips. Bring a pot of water to a boil. When it is boiling, add the bamboo shoots, fungus, tofu, pork, vinegar, sesame oil, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, and stir. Let the soup come back to a boil for 1 minute, then taste it and adjust the taste if desired. Add cornstarch and stir until desired thickness is reached. Slowly pour in the beaten egg and stir. Add salt and white pepper to taste. Serve hot.
