Goji Berries Benefits and Usage

Goji berries, also known as Chinese Wolfberries, are an extremely popular food item across Asia. Recently, they have been gaining popularity in the West as well. Goji berries are usually sold in dried form and look like red- and orange-colored raisins. As you may expect from their orange color, they contain large amounts of beta-carotene, the same antioxidant that is also found in carrots. Antioxidants have anti-cancer and anti-aging properties. In fact, goji berries contain even more beta-carotene than carrots!

Goji berries help strengthen the liver and kidneys. They are also good for eyesight and help improve vision. In addition, goji berries also promote younger-looking skin by increasing blood production and contain lots of vitamin C. You only need to eat 10-15 goji berries a day to get the health benefits, but you can certainly eat more if you want to. However, people who are on blood thinning medication should not eat goji berries.

There are several ways to eat goji berries:

In dried form. They can be eaten straight out of the package, just like raisins. They make a very healthy snack food.

In tea. This is a very popular choice in Asia, and one of the best combinations is goji berries in chrysanthemum tea. Allow the goji berries to sit in the hot tea for a few minutes before drinking, in order to re-hydrate them. Tip: Place the goji berries and chrysanthemum flowers into the cup first, then pour hot water into it. This will help bring out more flavor. Don’t add the ingredients into a cup already filled with hot water.

In rice porridge. If regular rice porridge tastes too plain for you, consider tossing in a few goji berries. They will give the porridge a naturally sweet flavor.

In soups. This is another popular choice, and goji berries work well in most types of soups (especially those containing meat) to give them a naturally sweet flavor.
