Common Diet Misconceptions

When I first came to the United States, I was shocked by how many Americans have the completely wrong ideas about dieting and weight loss. Despite all the fad diets, “miracle cures” and superfoods, America is the most obese (and one of the least healthy) nations in the world. This is made worse by all the scientific studies and research reports that come out each year, telling us we should do this, or eat that. Often, it is the food and diet industries that fund these studies and skew the data in their favor, in order to make us buy their products.

In truth, you only need to look at the nations whose populations are naturally healthy and fit, and see what they’re doing right. The Asian countries like China, Japan and Korea have some of the healthiest and longest-living people in the world. There is much that we can learn from their diet and lifestyle. For example:

  • Rice is better than wheat
  • Whole grains are not always better than processed grains
  • Cooked vegetables are better than raw ones
  • Fat is not the main contributor to weight gain
  • Dairy is for infants, not adults
  • Counting calories is unnecessary
  • Too much of anything (even things normally considered “healthy”) is harmful
  • Doing less = better results
